Learn to Swim as an Adult, at Your Own Pace
Most of the adults we teach are beginners learning to swim for the first time, usually between 30 and 65 years old. Every lesson is private and 1-on-1, so you get your instructor’s full attention, move at the pace you’re comfortable with, and never have to learn in front of a group.
Private, 1-on-1 Lessons
No group classes. Your instructor works only with you, so lessons go at the pace you set.
Heated Indoor Pools
Lessons take place in heated indoor pools with changing rooms and showers.
Start Where You Are
From getting comfortable putting your face in the water to swimming your first full length.
Adult Swim Lessons for Every Goal
Whether you’re learning for the first time, staying active after an injury or training for a race, lessons are built around what you want to achieve.
Daytime Swim Lessons for Retirees
Many swim schools only teach adults in the evenings, after working hours. Shane offers lessons throughout the workday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., which suits retired adults, shift workers and anyone who would rather swim while the pool is quiet.
Swimming After an Injury
Some of our adult students come to us because an injury keeps them from running, and their doctor or physiotherapist has recommended swimming instead. We’ll teach you the strokes and breathing you need to swim comfortably and keep active in the water.
We are swim instructors, not healthcare providers. Please follow your doctor’s or physiotherapist’s guidance, and tell us about your injury before your first lesson so we can plan around it.
Swim Training for Your First Triathlon
For many first-timers, the swim is the hardest leg. We focus on stroke efficiency so you move through the water with less effort and finish the swim with energy left for the bike and run.
Firefighter Swim Test Prep: OFAI Stage Four
We help firefighter candidates prepare for the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Stage Four Swim Test. Our lessons build the treading endurance and the steady, efficient stroke you need to pass both parts.
The swim test is only required by some fire service recruitments, so check the job posting you’re applying to, and confirm current test details with OFAI before booking.
What the Test Involves
According to the OFAI Swim Test Pre-Assessment Guide, there are two parts done back to back:
- 10-minute tread water: stay vertical with your head above water, without touching the wall or lane rope.
- 100-metre swim in 5 minutes or less: any mix of front crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke or sidestroke, with continuous forward progress and no stopping, standing or holding the edge.

Adult Swim Lesson FAQ
Is it too late to learn to swim as an adult?
No. Most of our adult students are between 30 and 65 and learning to swim for the first time. Private lessons let you start from the very basics without feeling rushed.
I’m nervous in the water. Can you still teach me?
Yes. Because every lesson is 1-on-1, we go at the pace you set and build your comfort in the water before moving on to strokes.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your starting point and your goal, whether that’s swimming your first length, preparing for a triathlon or passing the OFAI swim test. Your instructor can give you a sense of what to expect after your first lesson.
Can I book lessons during the day?
Yes. Shane teaches throughout the workday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., in Midtown Toronto at Yonge and Eglinton.
What is your cancellation policy?
You can reschedule for free up to 24 hours before your lesson. Lessons cancelled less than 24 hours before are non-refundable. More answers are on our FAQ page.
